Eleven students from the W.E.B. DuBois Middle School began their visit of River Walk with an educational tour to learn about how community volunteers created and sustain this trail. They were eager to pitch in! River Walk needed help with an overfull compost bin. Students yanked large sticks and branches from the compost pile and put them on a large tarp. It took the entire group to transport the tarp to the riverbank area. Then students carefully distributed branches on the downstream bank. The students were tireless and not to be discouraged! After all the branches were removed, leaves and other organic matter were turned to promote decomposition. They were also observant of a suprising obstruction in the river. A silt barrier, possibly from north county, has become entangled onto a fallen log. Removing this from the river will be a future project for the River Walk team.
