On October 23, 2026, a new addition was added to the Housatonic River Walk in memory of Mary Hassett Gilligan. The River Walk's Greenager Intern Team installed this new bench in the downstream section of the trail to provide visitors with a place to sit, rest, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
This project was made possible through a generous donation from the Gilligan family in order to create a lasting addition to this shared space in Mary’s honor. Their contribution helps to make River Walk an even more welcoming space for visitors to connect with nature and appreciate their surroundings.
The bench was installed next to the W. E. B. Du Bois Rain Garden and faces towards the river, allowing visitors easier access to the peaceful water view. The placement of the memorial bench also accommodates wheelchair users with enough space alongside the new bench for someone to sit comfortably beside it. This installment helps to make the River Walk more accessible and inclusive.
Our Greenagers team, Sam, Brian, and Bethany, worked alongside Christine Ward, River Walk Director, to make this installation possible. The process involved preparing the site by clearing away dirt, installing the bench bases, laying gravel, and compacting it to create a stable foundation. Through this hands-on project, the team helped transform the area into a comfortable and inviting place for the community to enjoy.
The new memorial bench is a meaningful addition to the Housatonic River Walk, honoring Mary Hassett Gilligan while creating a place for visitors to pause and reflet. The Gilligan family’s generosity has helped to establish a lasting tribute that visitors can enjoy for years to come. Next time you visit the River Walk, take a moment to sit by the water, listen to the flowing river, and appreciate the natural spaces that bring our community together.
Stay tuned for more information about the 2027 bench dedication ceremony.
