2024 Community Tree Planting at Lake Mansfield PHOTOS

Over 30 volunteers planted an enormous amount of donated native plants to continue to strengthen our Lake Mansfield forest edge and shoreline.

250 trees were donated from Helia Native Nursery as part of their 2024 Carbon Offset Program.

38 Trees were donated by Wards Nursery and Garden Center.

190 tree and shrub saplings from Lake Manfeild cuttings were grown on and returned by Helia Native Nursery for planting.

The Lake Mansfield saplings included willow, dogwood and native rose species.

Volunteers carried them to their planting places along the shoreline,

These shrubs will help to recreate the buffer area and help provide food and shelter to many bird species.

GBLC Board Members helped to lead the effort.

Many of the days participants were "repeat volunteers" who have dedicated hours to several GBLC trail and Conservation efforts. efforts.

As the morning warmed up, the planting continued, each planted tree helped the team to see that we could meet the ambitious goal for the morning.

The trees planted along the shoreline trail will provide much needed shade for the water and trail.

Oaks, Maples, Sycamores ....

. . . and birche will grow and mature, stabilizing the bank and providing excellent habitat.

Helia Native Nursery owner, Bridge McCracken led the forest restoration planting behind the new parking lot.

Partner, Jonathon Williams grabbed a shovel to pitch in on planting the trees he had delivered the day before.

Julian Williams was right there too!

Avery, a Helia Native Nursery nurseryman kept planters informed about tree specie names and special qualities as worked together.

Tree saplings were soaked and planted by many hands!

The soil was a bit stubborn by volunteers were not to be deterred!

Undaunted, they leaned into the task.

It took many trips to make this planting possible!

As each tree was planted, the team's sense of determination grew.

Great Barringon Liason, Sylvana Proano, planted several new saplings!

Great Barringon Liason, Jovanina Pagano hoisted out invasive burning bush roots.

Our younger volunteers were equally ambitious,

removing invasive bittersweet vines,

and hauling water from the lake to each newly planted tree on the forest edge.

Each time she walks beside Lake Mansfield, Tree Committee member, Julie Andijar can look forward to seeing the tree she planted grow.

She wont be alone! Several moms . . .

. . . and dads can enjoy knowing that their family helped, too

Proximity to the lake was a boost in helping water the shoreline plants.

Mulch will also help to foster the growth of the newly planted material.

Lake Mansfield has a treasured place in the hearts of those who have grown up nearby.

For dedicated, long-term volunteers like Dale Abrams, this day of restoration is a dream come true.

The weather was windy and brisk, the digging was far from easy, but our valiant volunteers were not to be discouraged!
