Volunteers Spring in to Action at Lake Mansfield!

SEE VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION!

2025 April 13th

GBLC volunteers were out for an early start to continue work on replanting the buffer zone at Lake Mansfield. Cool and damp spring temperatures are perfect for early spring plantings!  At this time of year, sustainable harvested willows and dogwood cuttings can be inserted into moist soils. The live stakes will push out roots and then branches. Each new shrub will help to strengthen the shoreline and provide excellent habitat for native insects and birds. The squad planted about 150 willow and dogwood “live stake” stems in groups of 3-5 mostly around the three new culverts.

The early spring timing was also perfect for checking on trees planted last fall. Some root balls had risen a bit due to frost. Volunteers carefully settled the trees back into places. In upcoming days,  volunteer days we will be mulching in each tree to help support their next stages of growth.
